Why I Built This
I remember calling officials during the BBB negotiation, begging them to vote no. It wasn't for myself—I knew I was going to be personally impacted by the SAVE Plan, but I didn't care. As a Black gay man, I’ve spent my life surviving systems that were never designed for me.
But this was for a six-year-old boy I helped raise... a superhero who loved Sonic and Tails and would make me get him chicken nuggets from McDonald's. He was going to be impacted worse because he was on Medicaid and would lose his coverage.
They wouldn't even know his name, but I did. And when I sat there and watched them vote for that bill, it showed me how they put greed over humanity. That child was innocent. And that broke me.
I’ve seen the forgotten man who lost his veteran benefits. I’ve seen the woman forced to ration her insulin to buy groceries. I’ve been the one saying, “This isn’t about politics. This is about people.”
I remembered Vice President Harris saying, "Don't complain about injustice. Do something about it." So I did.
I created Project Midlands to make sure those stories aren't just heard, but felt.
